Charity hits the back of the net with Wear Your Shirt Day 2010

Here’s a quick summary of the day – thanks again to everyone that took part and look out for Wear Your Shirt day 2011.

- – -

Hundreds of businesses, leading football clubs and celebrities alike supported Wear Your Shirt Day on Friday 23 April by wearing their football shirts at work and donating to The Free Kicks Foundation.

The Free Kicks Foundation provides football-related activities for ill, bereaved and disadvantaged children across the UK and the support received from Wear Your Shirt Day will help the charity to continue organising and providing unforgettable days out for children.

Wear Your Shirt Day received huge support from celebrity sports-stars including Dutch international footballer Edgar Davids, ex-England star Steve Froggatt, Olympic boxing bronze medalist Tony Jeffries and Robbie Savage, captain of Derby County F.C. Other celebrities backed the campaign online including Dragon’s Den entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne and musician Chesney Hawkes, who both supported the campaign on twitter. Comedian Jason Mansford also supported online and gave a generous donation to The Free Kicks Foundation.

Hundreds of nationwide businesses including; Bauer Media, Realwire, Siemens and worldwide money provider Travelex joined in with Wear Your Shirt Day by wearing their favourite football shirts and showing their company charity generosity.

Championship football clubs Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool, Derby County, Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United also got behind Wear Your Shirt Day and League Two side Lincoln City kindly donated a shirt signed by the whole team to the local business who raised the most money for The Free Kicks Foundation.

Patrick Smith, spokesperson for Wear Your Shirt day said “The Wear Your Shirt team is ecstatic with the huge support and generosity shown by football fans nationwide and would like to thank everyone involved for their continued support and generosity throughout the campaign.”

Siemens supports Wear Your Shirt day

The team at the Lincoln division of Siemens put on a great show of support for Wear Your Shirt Day this morning. A generous number of the 1200 strong workforce swapping either their suits or overalls for their favourite football shirt.

The grassy banks of the factory were awash with different coloured shirts all jockeying for front row position for the photo call with the media. There was the obligatory England strip worn by a few along with a couple Brazilian tops (maybe there was a bit of wishful thinking for the weather!!) However the clear winner for the bunch at Siemens was Lincoln City F.C. Strips old and new showed just how much support the local team have.

As an incentive to the local business that raised the most on the day the signed shirt by Lincoln City F.C was modeled by an initially reluctant Rosie from Lava PR although the sunshine and banter during the photo call soon had her smiling again.

Show us your tops!

As your wearing your shirt tomorrow, feel free to take a photo and send it in to me here – patrick@wearyourshirt.co.uk. I will endeavour to get as many as possible up on the site during the day.

I think they’ll look great.

Let’s get #wearyourshirt trending

For those of you not on Twitter I apologise. You can stop reading now if you like … step away from the blog … nothing to see here. You could give your shirt another iron if you like – to make sure it’s pristine for tomorrow!

For those of you who are on Twitter, I suggest that we try to get the hashtag #wearyourshirt trending.

What I propose is that at 11am UK time tomorrow morning, everyone wearing a shirt in support of Wear Your Shirt day tweets the following message.

“I’m supporting #wearyourshirt in my [team name] shirt”

Obviously you’ll need to put your own team name in there – so for me it will read “I’m supporting #wearyourshirt in my Burton Albion shirt”.

If enough of us do it then we should get it trending. Who knows, if there are enough of you wearing the same shirts then you might even see a few clubs trending (I accept that Burton Albion probably won’t be one of them!)

Remember, 11am tomorrow: “I’m supporting #wearyourshirt in my [team name] shirt”.

Tony Jeffries’ support is a knockout

Olympic Medallist and BBC’s North East Sports Personality 2008 Tony Jeffries has today given his full support to Wear Your Shirt Day 2010 by agreeing to wear his Sunderland A.F.C. shorts in his next fight this Friday.

‘Jaffa’ is looking to continue his unbeaten professional career in his showdown with tough Welsh challenger Nathan King on St Georges Day and all the team here wish him the best of luck in his fight.

Tony is the most recent celebrity endorser of Wear Your Shirt Day 2010 and his support has helped the campaign to gain further momentum and is greatly appreciated by all at Wear Your Shirt.
